Crummy rattling from the box/grill September 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was pretty excited about this subwoofer when I got it. The was a powerful unit for the price. There is tons of power...no question about that. The problem is if I turn the volume up half-way or more, the box/grill rattle very loud. I've found many other people online have had the same problem. I was trying to give it a chance because I really wanted to keep it. The rattle drove me nuts and no amount of adjustment could fix it. Unfortunately I called just a few days after the 30 days were up and the distributor (J&R world???)wouldn't even talk to me about the problem...they said I had to call Onkyo for service. I called Onkyo...they wouldn't take it back or replace it...my only option is to take it in to an authorized service place that is 2 hours away. They were total jerks about it over the phone. Apperantly I was speaking to Mr. Onkyo himself because he said there was no supervisor higher than him I could talk to. Crappy rattle with crappy service.
Great Sub September 28, 2008 Definitely a great subwoofer, especially for the price - When you look at the two controls, frequency and level, it tends to muddle out the closer to 200 you have it - I find setting it about 70 to 80 (the lower end of the range) and having the level set about mid-way provides the right kind of low end balance that I need. Although I am running a pair of studio monitors at the front of the soundstage - If running only satellite or micro speakers, you may want to bring the gain up to about 120 or 130 to get more of the vocal base range. By no means is it small, and there's an auto off feature that won't turn the sub on until it get's a strong enough signal. It's just a matter of getting used to it. Other than that, I love it!
Lots of features for a low price. September 7, 2008 This is one of 2 subwoofers I recently obtained. The other is the Yamaha YST-SW216BL Advanced YST II Front-Firing Active Subwoofer. This is the better of the 2. It has more power, and more control because with this model you can adjust the crossover frequency with a knob vs a high/low switch on the Yamaha, very nice. You can also adjust the volume the same as the Yamaha. What is really cool is that it has a standby mode when its not receiving a signal from your audio source. There is a red light on the front when in standby mode which turns green when the unit is active. Standby mode and the ability to choose the cross-over frequency along with it being a more powerful unit you can use in larger areas are what set this apart from the Yamaha. The only thing the Yamaha has that this unit doesn't is inputs for speaker wires.
perfect match August 9, 2008 bought the Onyko 505 7.1 receiver and hooked up ther subwoofer--perfect match and what a great price
Great Sub for the price July 22, 2008 Great sounding sub, for 100 bucks. If you want something better you 're gonna have to fork over more $$ but if you have a small-medium room this one is sufficient, my friend had a klipch, and the sound is almost the same, his is downfiring and this one is not but both shake the walls and movies really chnage went you hear them thru a nice sub like this one, if you're like me, someone that doen't have the budget to buy a 400-500 dollar sub this one is more than enough.
