Think clock radios are inherently boring? Think again. Sangean's RS-330, looking very much like a run-of-the-mill night-table fixture, is actually a compact and unusually well-designed dual-alarm clock radio with--no kidding--decent sound quality. Separate bass and treble controls let you tailor the sound quality while the auxiliary audio input and output offer flexibility in sound sources. The RS-330 is a model of clarity: its fluorescent blue display is large and intuitively laid out, its two alarms are easy to set, and its sound focuses though a single, natural-sounding speaker. (If you want stereo, Sangean makes a slightly cheaper mate, the RS-332, which accepts an audio feed and alarm commands from the RS-330 through a supplied multipin cable and lets you hear each alarm through a different speaker.) Conveniently, the RS-330's radio sets its own presets (12 FM and 12 AM) using Sangean's Auto-Program Setting (APS) feature, and reconfiguring those presets is a simple operation. Unfortunately, there are only six preset buttons, requiring a two-step process (and the equivalent of a shift key) to access presets 7 through 12 in either the FM or AM band. Sangean supplies an FM antenna, but we found the radio offered good reception even without it (though performance will vary with locale). A large side knob handles volume adjustments (including balanced adjustments through the RS-332, if you wish). Individual bass and treble controls--rare beasts in the jungle of clock radios--rest below. You can crank the bass and treble to keep the frequency extremes from being lost at quiet listening levels, or you can reduce the bass output for more natural sound at higher listening levels. The speaker will distort if you turn the volume too high with the bass maxed. Clock settings are a cinch, as the RS-330 uses a single button (just out of accidental reach) to toggle through the main clock time and the settings for alarms 1 and 2. You can set each alarm for either radio or beeper, and each alarm gets its own volume knob on the back panel. The alarm levels function independently of the master radio level, whether you've selected the radio or the beeper for your alarm. This brings a certain freedom in listening--you never have to worry about whether you've left the volume too loud or too quiet for the next day's wake-up. For nighttime lullabies, the RS-330 offers a Sleep function. The default setting is one hour, but you can set it anywhere from one minute up to six hours by hitting Sleep and adjusting the duration with the tuning (up/down) buttons. Conversely, you can set a countdown timer for up to six hours using a Timer button. The beeper, but not the radio, sounds at the end of the countdown. You even get to choose separate stations to fall asleep and wake up to, though both alarms must wake to the same radio station since the radio-alarm defaults to preset 1 of your last-auditioned band (FM or AM). (Linking with the RS-332 permits additional and differing presets.) The snooze bar, which gives you five minutes of sleepy reprieve with every smack, is easy to hit and appropriately wide. A wonderful touch is Sangean's inclusion of an auxiliary audio input and output (both 0.125-inch stereo mini jacks), which lets you use the RS-330 as an amplifier/speaker for a CD player or a cassette deck (through the input) and as a facilitating hookup with an integrated amplifier, or a cassette or minidisc recorder (through the output). For a winning combination of stylish appearance, alarm flexibility, and pleasing sound quality, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better choice than the Sangean RS-330. --Michael Mikesell Pros:

After spending a considerable amount of time researching alarm clocks on the internet, I settled on the Sangean RS-330 as a replacement for the low quality inexpensive alarm clocks I've used throughout the first 30 years of my life. I've had this thing for a month or so now, and I'm quite impressed.
The sound quality, as far as clock radios go, is definitely above par. Falling asleep to NPR music or the BBC world service is like a lullaby for me with the Sangean's sleep timer enabled. The slowly increasing volume level upon wake up is an excellent way to start ones day. In my opinion, this is perhaps the best feature. I'm a very sound sleeper, and this unit has never failed to awaken me, unlike previous alarm clocks.
Operating this unit couldn't be much simpler after spending a few minutes perusing the instruction manual. The buttons seem to me to be well laid out and easy enough to locate and operate in the dark with a bit of practice. The display is perfectly adequate, allowing me to see the time without my glasses. Not too bright, and not too dim once adjusted to my liking. As other reviewers have pointed out, the display brightness adjustment potentiometer can be damaged if you're too rough with it. I had no problem making the adjustment with the screwdriver on my Swiss army knife, which happened to be conveniently located on my nightstand. It's unlikely that I'll ever touch it again.
I can see how the cost of the RS-330 could scare away some potential buyers. While value is certainly subjective, I'm extremely happy with my purchase and feel that the cost is justified.

I had brought this because the store salesperson said it was made by the people who made the Proton. I've never heard of the Proton so I assumed he's trying to tell me its a good deal, so I bought it. The sound was pretty good but not as good as the replacement I got (XDR-S3HD). See my review on that one. The RS-330 comes with a dual alarm and a 5 minute snooze. Which had everything I was looking for. But after 3 days the sound went. I've tried hitting the reset button and leaving it unplugged for a few hours but the sound never returned. Actually there is sound but it was extremely low. Volume at max did nothing and the only reason I can hear any sound was by setting the treble all the way up and having my ear close to the speaker. Grabbing the radio was a bit difficult because it was hard not to press a button by accident.
If the Proton was a good product then this is it's inferior relative. From other reviews, it looks like you'll take a gamble on this one. It'll either work or not. My guess is it's produced in different countries so the quality depends on the country it is produced. Mine was manufactured in August 2007 but It doesn't tell me where.
Sangean Digital AM/FM Clock Radio February 9, 2008
I purchased this radio about two months ago to replace my Proton R5A. The Proton still worked but the LED went out and repairing was not an option because of the cost. Besides, Proton radios are no longer available. I chose the RS-330 because the specs were close to the R5A. To my surprise, it looked and felt the same. The RS-330 buttons were slightly larger and not as clean looking as the R5A but the unit is well built and solid.
For a clock radio, the Sangean RS-330 has very good sound. I listen to a lot of AM talk radio so the clarity of the spoken voice is important. I also listen to some FM but don't think I'll need to get the companion stereo component. For serious sound filling stereo FM, I'll listen to my sound system. Overall this radio sounds much better than the vast majority of clock radios on the market and provides very good sound at normal listening levels.
Thank goodness, I don't have the hum other reviewers mentioned. The LED display is nice and slightly larger than the Proton R5A. I can easily adjust it for my bedroom at night. The buttons are well arranged and the different shapes are nice for night operation. The true test was finding stations in the middle of the night without turning on the light and waking your companion.
I recommend this unit if you want a good looking AM/FM Clock Radio that sounds good, easy to use and fits nicely and looks handsome on your night stand. Even the price is reasonable.

Radio has very good sound. and tuning is easy. Can't believe time does not say am-pm on the clock face. Took trial and error to set the alarm as did not know if it was set for 8am or 8pm. Alarm is also very soft, need to set another alarm if I really need to get up.

This is a replacement for the great Protron clock radio. They have more than met the challenge. It is feature rich, easy to use, and has a great display. It is easy to set up and has good fidelity. By far this is the best clock radio I've ever owned. I haven't tried the satellite piece, but look forward to adding it on. The only issue to concern yourself with is the footprint, not a huge unit, but not small either.
