Best Deal Ever December 8, 2008 I bought these a few months back because my old speakers were toast. I wasn't expecting much since the price is so low, but when new speakers become a necessity for a man with limited funds...
So, I get home late from a 12 hour work day and break these out for a test run and...
I'll be damned! These little unassuming boxes start pumping out the kind of perfect, flat-response sound that I have always figured could only come from sticking headphones over my ears. Even at low volumes things sound clear, articulate, direct.
Of course woofers this size won't work for a hip hop house quake, but that's more a special effect than accurate music reproduction. (I like some rap music, so don't misunderstand me here people.)
Also, deep rumbles from that dvd action movie will require a sub woofer most def, but that's a future purchase during better economic times.
As for other reviewers' complaints about "boomy" sound. I can only surmise that these people are suffering from a loss of high frequency hearing. These speakers come as close to the flat frequency reponse of my Grado and Sony headphones as any speakers I have heard. At any price. In fact, the best setting on my stereo is completely "flat" with no increase in bass or treble settings.
I have the speakers in a moderate sized, carpeted room, thus I am not entirely certain if larger speakers would be better in a large area. In the room I have them in, serious ear damage is just a twist of the volume knob away. And I have yet to find myself thinking that they sound tinny or small.
I have been listening to music through headphones for many years (I'm 38 years old) and loudspeakers have always seemed to me a compromise. Granted, loudspeakers provide the "feel" of lower frequencies which can't be obtained through Sennheiser, Grado or Sony "cans." (My personal favorites) But I've always felt that recordings get a little distant and muddy through loudspeakers. Not so with these Polks.
Another problem with speakers can be an emphasis on a certain frequency range at the expense of the rest of the sound. For example, in both of my cars, there is an increase in the high end due to the overactive tweeters. Also, boomy bass seems to be part of the car stereo experience. For some recordings, this can sound just great, but I still kind of prefer to hear music the way it was intended. That's right, the way it sounds coming out of these cheap @zz lil speakers.
Alas, not everyone will hear things the same, but as Miles Davis once said with his trumpet, "So What?"
Polks are beautiful durable and very well crafted!!! August 4, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful

these speakers are ok, but rank below my 17-year-old jbl's..the polk's are a bit tinny .but OK..i was able to move my old jbl's to the media room and gave my wife the new polks
Perfect for flat panel system July 9, 2008 when combined with a CS1 center. Could not be happier. Clear with good sound field.
Excellent Speakers May 25, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased these speakers for both music and to use as temporary front speakers for my dvd movies. These speaker boxes are quality built and very solid. The highs are excellent and allowed me to hear highs I never heard before in the movies. For the lows, the speakers are a bit boomy from the rear ports. After reading a review of another user with the suggestion of stuffing the port with a sock, I filled mine with foam. This made the bass nice and tight and also improved the mids as well. The bass that comes from these little speakers is pretty amazing and was much more than I expected; however, don't expect earth-shattering bass from bookshelf speakers of any kind. If you purchase these speakers, you won't be disappointed.
