I was so excited to get new speakers to go along with my new iMac. I have these great 3 piece Altec speakers from around 1998 that came with my Dell, but I thought "why not get cool looking new Altecs to match my cool iMac" assuming they should also sound better....after all, it's been 10 years of R&D right?
What a disappointment. They sound literally like the sound is coming from tin cans. I've played with equalizers to no avail. No bass. I guess that's what I was most worried about going with a 2 piece system and I guess the concern was valid. But even the mids and highs sound tinny.
I went back to the old Altecs which look dated but sound great ... nice full range top to bottom. Oh well...I should know time doesn't improve everything.

Finally, it looks like Altec Lansing is stepping out of the industry rut of painfully ugly desktop audio products. The FX2020 looks just as good on the desk as online photos suggest. Speaking of which, while some pre-release photos show a separate controller knob, controls are actually built into one of the satellites.
The speakers are a good weight for their size, exactly what you want when you pick up a speaker, but each speaker is larger than you might expect from the photos. Sound is rich and deeper than I expected out of a 2.0 system, but obviously there is no subwoofer, so don't expect to feel it in the floorboards. There's plenty of bass for music and movies, though, especially if you're using them in a bedroom or office. Music and dialog are clear and balanced.
The only real downside is that I find them a tad overpriced, but they are a solid competitor for any other 2.0 systems in this price range (not to mention being much more attractive), so I can't fault them for that. Otherwise, the volume control can be a little touchy, but you get used to it easily enough.
